Libken as a Place

Libken is a vibrant space for thinking and production on the edge of the small Uckermark village of Böckenberg. In a four-storey residential building with 24 apartments, people and their projects find room to unfold—whether in art, culture, activism, movement, or science. The building is surrounded by wide fields and a large garden that offers space for growth, creativity, and exchange.

Since 2014, the building has been gradually renovated with the help of friends, supporters, and guests. Today, Libken offers not only living spaces but also workspaces and an extensive outdoor area that equally allows for retreat, focused work, and exchange. Individuals as well as groups of up to approximately 40 people can work creatively here and find inspiration.

Residencies

Our guest season runs from April to mid-October. During winter, Libken is closed.

Individuals can book stays of two weeks or longer, while groups may also stay for shorter periods. Anyone arriving with a work project—whether artistic, academic, or otherwise—is always welcome. In addition, we occasionally award space-based fellowships, which are announced on our website and on Instagram.

Stay and Care

Libken is an open place where people from different backgrounds and lived realities come together. The site offers both retreat and concentration as well as exchange, discourse, and experimentation with different ways of working and living. It thrives on the impulses of everyone involved—the operators, long- and short-term collaborators, and guests.

The residency program is organized by a four-person team. Some tasks are paid, while much of the work is carried out on a voluntary basis. Libken is run by a nonprofit association, which means that resources and services are limited.

Since 2024, there has been a rotating guest care coordinator. This person initiates impulses for shared gatherings and is available as a point of contact for questions or conflicts.

We continuously reflect on our perspectives and work to make stays as inclusive as possible for everyone. Libken addresses people of all backgrounds; however, we are aware that there may still be barriers for BIPOC, LGBTIQ+, and people with disabilities. To help make your stay comfortable, you are welcome to let us know in advance how you would like to be addressed or which access needs are relevant for you. We are always available as points of contact for this.

Unfortunately, the apartments at Libken are not barrier-free. The lowest apartment is located on the first floor. Interested guests are welcome to contact us to discuss whether the place is suitable for their needs.
