Cinema – The Truth Lies In Rostock (1993)

It is noticeable everywhere: politics and society are shifting to the right. This means, among other things, that the threat level increases for people who are not perceived as German – or are otherwise considered “different.” In Germany’s past, such sentiments have repeatedly erupted into pogroms against migrants – for example, in 1993 in Rostock. The documentary film The Truth Lies in Rostock (directed by Mark Saunders and Siobhán Cleary) deals with this event.

Because it is important to remember these events, we would like to watch the film together with all interested participants.
Afterwards, there will be time for discussion.
We look forward to seeing you!

///////

In August 1992, a mob of local residents and neo-Nazis attacked the “Central Reception Center for Asylum Seekers” (ZaST) in the Rostock district of Lichtenhagen for four days. Enthusiastic and applauding Germans turned the brutal pogrom into a racist folk festival, where, largely undisturbed by the police, they carried out the delusion of a “Germany only for Germans.” It is almost a miracle that no one died during the riots. The video production The Truth Lies in Rostock was created with significant participation of people who were present in the attacked shelter at the time. Therefore, the production is not only characterized by authenticity but also serves, years later, as an unflinching critique of a prevailing mood in West German society that made pogroms against migrants or simply “those who look different” possible in the first place.
