How are experiences of historical transformation preserved and passed on between people? What traces has the GDR left in my body – and what in yours? What happened? Since 2020, the artist & author Anna Zett and the performer & choreographer Hermann Heisig have been exploring these questions together. As part of a long-term artistic research project, they developed an improvisation format for open groups that combines dialogic storytelling with free dance and sound improvisation.

Assembly – Resonance Assembly | Post-Socialist Group Improvisation
As part of the residency program #takeheart, funded by Neustart Kultur and managed by the flausen+ network, the artist and author Anna Zett and the performer and choreographer Hermann Heisig were guests in February. Together with a group of experienced participants, they further developed their participatory format RESONANCE – POST-SOCIALIST GROUP IMPROVISATION. On June 12, they will return and invite the public in the afternoon to a RESONANCE ASSEMBLY, taking place in the former waterworks on the Libken grounds and outdoors.
What is a RESONANCE ASSEMBLY? A RESONANCE ASSEMBLY is a participatory performance without an audience, composed of various play and discussion formats in which the attending group self-organizes thematically and physically. The spatial framework is a 25 m² square playing field, and the temporal framework is four hours. Unlike a discussion panel, the process is formally structured by simple rules and instruments, allowing everyone to contribute and co-decide what happens in the group at any time. Without needing to agree on a collective narrative, personal associations with the GDR and the later “East” are expressed and brought to resonance, either directly or indirectly. The themes addressed and the ways in which participants interact are co-determined by the actions and interests of everyone present. This new format aims to open up new imaginative spaces in GDR discourse, often unconsciously shaped by personal experiences of violence, on both individual and societal levels.
RESONANCE is open to all. No training or prior experience is required to participate. Active involvement is voluntary, and no one is forced to do anything specific. Personal openness and an interest in music, movement, or drawing facilitate participation!
