If Only Patterns Make Us

The project If Only Patterns Make Us brings together pieces for two voices, a cappella and with accompaniment, as well as for a mixed vocal ensemble. The new works by composers and vocalists Evelyn Saylor and Dina Maccabee reflect their diverse interest in both contemporary and traditional vocal forms. In their ongoing collaboration, they develop a shared vocabulary characterized by interlocking musical patterns, “human delay,” and the interplay of vocal textures.

In a two-hour workshop, Maccabee and Saylor share their interest in contemporary singing as a communal and community-building practice. They introduce various singing techniques that are central to their work. The workshop invites participants with and without musical or vocal experience to sing.
